Music Copyright

Musical copyrights are fairly complex, with rights existing in the composition, the performance, and the recording of a work.

Music and the Internet

As the Internet continues to become primary means of communication and commererce - the leakage of value from copyright product such as music is of increasing concern to songwriters, publishers and whose incomes or investment are based on how tightly they can control distribution.

Response of the Music Industry

AMCOS is an organisation of music publishers. APRA is the organisation which licences public performance, broadcast and cable diffusion of copyright music and lyrics. Each of these organisations have tried different approaches to address the issues - and arguably with little sucess and in some cases backlash from the intended audience of products.

Response of the Government in Australia

The Australian Government is working to adapt the current legislative framework in relation to copyright to make the system more workable and easier to operate within in the digital age.
