You
Am I are, to put it simply, an institution. Over
the years they have etched their name in australian
rock history, and have achieved a kind of respect
that is not bestowed upon many. With their sixth
studio album Deliverance, Tim, Andy, Rusty and David
return to the spotlight and present what is, in
my opinion, one of the best australian albums of
2002.
It is on the 43rd second of opening track "words
for sadness" that the guitar kicks in and re-affirms
your faith in this band, whom in their 10+ year
career, have never delivered a disappointing record.
Listening to Tim Rogers' voice is like slipping
into your favourite pair of jeans, there is a familiarity
both comfortable and re-assuring. The trademark
You Am I sound is stamped all over this song, and
it's a fantastic introduction to a record of undeniable
shine.
First
single "who put the devil in you" hits you straight
with a big, dirty riff, announcing that rock is
still alive and kicking in this camp, and while
Deliverance overall has stepped down slightly from
the pub rock sound and has upped the acoustic factor,
this is still a record that will appeal to those
who like their guitars loud and their music honest.
"Progressive" can be a sticky label to pin on a
new release, especially one from an outfit so established,
but it fits Deliverance perfectly - they have retained
the sound which made previous classics such as "purple
sneakers" and "berlin chair" anthems of their time,
whilst moving forward and simultaneously securing
their place as one of the most important and respected
rock bands in the country.
There are no weaknesses on this album - "city lights"
is tailor-made for late friday-night listening,
"crash" is complete class, and "ribbons and bows",
the sparkling highlight of a fantastic collection
of songs.
If
you're wondering where the passion's gone, need
a bit of escapism, or just want a reminder of what
top-shelf bourbon tastes like, go out and buy Deliverance.
It'll be the best move you make all year.
