From
the outset, this is one great debut album from Sydney's
four piece Sounds Like Sunset. "Each Time You
Smile" sets the pace & mood for the following
eleven songs. Textured guitar work, sweet vocal
hooks, meaningful & touching lyrics, and every
song has sufficient breathing space. Musical influences
I could pick out are as diverse as The Beach Boys
to the Smashing Pumpkins, with a little My Bloody
Valentine thrown in for good measure.
The album almost falls apart with the experimental
tracks (Babysteps, Squeaky Clean & Sing Forever),
but hang in there, because as soon as you start
to wonder what happened, you'll be hit with another
mesmerizing song. Highlight tracks would have to
be Each Time You Smile, Someone Special, Unfair,
Start Again & It's So Cold Where You Sleep.
There's a bit of a Beach Boy's vocalesque trend
happening with a few modern day bands, many of which
miss the mark, however Sounds Like Sunset hit it
in fine form.
