Providing
a high-class, high-energy display as the two support
bands for US group Jimmy Eat World's WA side show,
Gyroscope and Jebediah were in fine form this Monday
night, proving without a doubt that Perth talent
can mix it with the best of them. .

Taking
to the stage with a capacity crowd looking on, local
four-piece Gyroscope delivered a set constructed
from songs off their second EP "Take Time." Having
been released on Jebediah's label Redline, the exposure
has certainly prompted interest from anyone not
yet familiar with the band, and in a rare situation,
the material on this particular occasion was delivered
live as well as - if not better than - the studio
recordings. These guys know how to work a stage
and be visually entertaining, but more importantly,
they know how to pull it off whilst still playing
solidly. You simply cannot tire of looking at Gyroscope,
they never stop moving, and the stage antics come
off not as an attempt to spark attention - even
though that's exactly what they do - but more just
a natural enthusiasm for the music which they make.
EP opener "Save the Last Match" was a highlight
of an all-round strong set, intense and serious
yet catchy and fun, a description which could also
be applied to the band as a whole.

Fresh
from appearing at the Big Day Out the day before,
Jebediah were given the job of second support, a
slot which they have not occupied for quite some
time. A band that consistently delivers enthusiastic
performances, they were in fine form, and played
a set of tried-and-true songs that somehow still
manage to sound exciting and new, no matter how
many showings they get. New track "Worlds Away"
is nothing short of amazing, and is somewhat reminiscent
of their early recordings - an energetic, upbeat
verse gives way to a chorus destined for singalongs,
and there's that factor in there somewhere, that
certain unexplainable thing that lifts a song from
being just good to being undeniably fantastic. It
leaves you wondering where future recordings will
take Jebediah... while their sound may not be breaking
any revolutionary new musical ground, it doesn't
need to, as they do what they do well, and a great
deal better than most.

"Of Someday
Shambles" track Star Machine got kicked off the
set in favour of a crowd-request, and they launched
into Jerks of Attention with all the energy that
they would have done 5 years ago. The song never
fails to capture you live, and sparked full involvement
on the audience's part, singing every word and prompting
the band to say that there's nothing like a hometown
show. Jebs techie and part-time Eskimo Joe recruit
Fergus joined them onstage for the final song NDC,
leaving Kevin to take care of mic duties sans-guitar,
a task he appeared more than comfortable with. Having
given a performance which could have rivalled the
headline act, Jebediah exited the stage to huge
applause, the crowd left with a reminder of just
how good at this game they really are. Classy stuff.
