With
a CD like this, it's hard to know whether to pick
up an air guitar or just laugh. You just hope, as
you listen to …keep it hot, that maybe, just
maybe, The Casanovas are in on the joke too. I hope
they are, because they have been listening to far
too much AC/DC, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
Guitars are great, but a constant, unchanging, onslaught
is almost unbearable.
The
predominant sound of …keep it hot is the
crunch of guitars. Only the epic guitar riff of
"Keep It Hot" and the pseudo-pop-punk rhythms of
"Too Cool" really distinguish themselves. Otherwise,
the songs meld into a sonic blur of riffs and lead
breaks. "Won't Go Down" tries a change-up by opening
with a typically workmanlike drum beat, but it soon
settles into the same pattern. The organ intro to
"10 Outta 10" is just naff.
This
is the main problem with …keep it hot. Rock
music is ultimately contrived, but The Casanovas
are just silly. Most of the songs on …keep it
hot are catchy enough - and probably rock in
a live setting - but listening to the lyrics makes
it impossible to take them seriously. "Keep It Hot"
is riddled with cliches - from misogyny ("You've
got it baby yeah you've got the best") to farce
("Risin' up one thousand degrees") - whilst in "10
Outta 10" The Casanovas even namecheck themselves.
I can cope with this sort of lyric, but the last
time I had to was when I last watched Beverly Hills
Cop II.
