Having
signed onto Brisbane-based label Dew Process recently,
this month marks the re-release of The Fergusons'
second EP "Never Too Young To Hitch Hike". If it
hasn't already got a spot in your collection, this
is the best excuse you'll get to discover the WA
5-piece's charms.
Opening
track "Everything's Gone Bad" is a perfect slice
of pop, melodic guitars and vocal harmonies dominate
the song, which recently came in at #88 on Triple
J's Hottest 100. It sounds fresh, new and exciting,
a fantastic display of the talent which these guys
possess, and paves the way for what is overall an
extremely solid set of tunes.
Part
of The Fergusons' appeal is that they're every bit
as catchy a pop-rock band as you could find, yet
their sound has a distinct uniqueness, they're a
little bit like nothing you've heard before. Coming
from such a healthy local music scene as Perth's,
this is undoubtedly a factor which makes them stand
out amongst many a strong band at home. The triple-axe
lineup gives a great depth to their music, and "Napalm
Waltz" sees Matt Wheeler stand up and affirm that
he is no ordinary drummer, laying the ground for
a song that leaps in every which direction but still
remains a smooth and interesting listen. "Blue Screen"
has a quirky sweetness all it's own, and "Great
Barrier Reefers" has dual vocals layered over an
instantly-infectious array of sprawling guitars.
There
is simply not a weak moment within these 5 songs,
The Fergusons capture your heart with great hooks
and diverse sounds, leaving you eagerly awaiting
their forthcoming EP. I tried to find a flaw, but
the simple truth is that Never Too Young To Hitch
Hike shines, and is a must-own for any self-respecting
follower of great young Australian bands. These
guys are on their way.
