Sydney
based rock-pop quartet Merge have excelled with
their third EP 'The need to fall'. Whilst admittedly
the first listen leaves you feeling like the group
attempted to head off in a number of musical directions
and lost themselves somewhere in the process, continued
listening will undoubtedly change your mind.
The
confronting cross genre soundscape of the bands
third effort showcases their embracing of numerous
musical styles as opposed to committing themselves
to a restrictive 'defining sound'. Opening with
'Hold on' a catchy rat-a-tat-tat number the six
track EP then juxtaposes the gritty blues rock tune
'Darkest night' with 'Twisted'; an infectious doo
whop pop number. Twang-lined 'Seasons' will challenge
any conceptions you were beginning to form about
the group with its dive into country-ville, all
before Merge finally let you down gently with the
acoustic mood piece 'Vertigo'.
The
vocal ability of Kylee Dean Willcocks shines through
the EP with a range that swoons operatic swan song
as easily as it viciously spits in-your-face blows
similar to that of Alannis Morisette. The lyrics
are articulate and stylised and most effectively
lathered in conviction.
Produced
by ARIA award winning producer John Prior (Tibetan
Prayer, IOTA's Hip Bone Connection) 'The need to
fall' delivers a diverse mix of acoustic and electric
tracks that challenge the pre-defined borders of
rock music. Having already headlined numerous shows
across the Sydney live circuit and supporting the
likes of Leonardo's Bride, Karma County, Mick Hart
and Max Sharam Merge's unique brand of power groove
music is beginning to build a following…and deservedly.
